I had to lube my chain again today and got tired of rolling the bike around. So I built this DIY stand from some extra wood I had laying around. Worked really well actually. The only thing I would change is to extend the base a bit farther forward.

pretty sure it has to do with the leverage it takes to get the bike on the stand.
That makes no sense at all. If the legs were longer in the front you wouldn't be able to leverage the thing at all. The issue I see is the weight of the bike will want to leverage it forward and there is nothing to keep it from doing that. If you turned it around the weight of the bike would have the leverage towards the front legs and be stable. I don't think he is using it like a lever bike jack anyways. I think he is just lifting it up the 2 " to set it on the stand.

I agree, but if you turn it around, what's to keep it from falling backwards?

This is a nice build, but from the looks of it, you'd have to be extremely gentle with the bike so as to not cause it to fall and come off the stand

When you tip something on an angle it transfers weight to the low end, in this case it would be the front preventing it from falling. You can get front or rear stands on Ebay for $30 ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/110947181633?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)
It's only $5 if you have all the parts needed laying around and you think your time is worth nothing putting it together. You could stack the 2 4x4s and just put them under the middle of the frame and accomplish the same thing without any assembly. I do credit him for find a solution to his issue and making use of his time.

I completely agree, I wasn't very clear though. I meant, what's the keep it from falling backwards as you're working on it

It doesn't look like it would provide enough support to keep it from going forward or backward as I'm loosening or tightening the oil drain bolt or the oil filter bolt, for example.

If you're trying to convince me that this isn't the best method to use, save your breathe. I would rather spend $30 and have a proper stand to work with. I can see where if he centered the uprights the whole thing would be more stable and you would need to lift the bike onto the pads. You can't really leverage the bike onto the stand with a square corner. That's why they have wheels on the pro ones.
On his the least I would do is make the two 3" long pieces the swing arm rests on to go to the floor so the bike isn't supported by only the 2 screws holding those pieces on. It would be nice if the OP would add some more input on this subject and his use of it.
