I got an 05 ninja 250 with 9400 miles about a month ago, did a oil change a couple days ago vans now my clutch is shifting funny. Up shifting is a little clunky and some times down shifting it wants to stick. Any ideas?

It's 10w 40
Pennzoil
Conventional
I think I actually over filled it a little and no I didn't adjust anything.
I know it's not motorcycle oil but I looked around threw the forum and it seemed like most ppl don't use motorcycle oil.

You don't need motorcycle oil, so you're good on the oil type. I don't think 10w-40 is very encouraged, but it shouldn't do anything bad to your bike.

How long have you had the bike? The shifting on the '88-'07 250's is known for being pretty kinky.

Overfilling it is hazardous. You can use the sprayer from a spray bottle and get as much oil out as you can until you get the right level of oil in there.

What oil weight would you recommend?
I've only had the bike about 2 months now and the clutch seemed fine until the oil change.

You're using a cheap car oil. Try a 10w-40 motorcycle oil. Synthetic if you like. Should make a difference. You can find it at Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Pep Boys etc..

They call it motorcycle oil for a reason. Bikes need good quality oil that has good shear strength and additives for a wet clutch. (I think two of the differences are, or used to be, phosphorus for bike clutches and moly for car oil) I use, and have always used 10-w40 Mobil One Synthetic in all of my bikes with no problems and lots of miles. Some people do have great luck with car oil, (but why risk it?)

I haven't noticed any difference between motorcycle oil and good quality car oil. I've used both multiple times. From my experience, if you get good quality oil of either kind that is of the correct weight, it's not gonna make a huge difference. However, since the first oil change, all I've used is fully synthetic, and would definitely recommend fully synthetic oil

Mostly I use car oil for my FZ600 bike. I have found no difference between motorcycle oil and car oil.
