Unhappy runs like shit

went for a cruise and bike was having trouble taking off, real slugish and couldnt gas it to much at all, was bogging out
went to the gas station to see if it was out of gas and it wouldnt start up, had to haul it back

so im looking for some easy things to change or check before i maybe break into doing a full carb job which i think is rediculous for a 2012 with 15,000 miles, but i did ride to the desert and my air filter was pretty dirty.

my neighbor was thinking a fuel filter, im lost

i had it start with the choke all the way on once today tried a few times and it sounded like complete shit and when i twisted the throttle it just shut off, please help!

I'm sure you cleaned your air filter once you got back from your desert ride right? If not try that or get a new one they are cheap even for a K&N less then $50. Replace spark plugs. If they look oily then your carbs need turned. I think that means your running rich. To much fuel and the motor can't burn it off. You can run a hotter spark plug to that might help.
I'm not a wiz at this just going by what has happened to my bike.

i think its so weird how if i start it with the gas cap open that it sounds way better, i really think its a air issue not sure will let u know how it goes today

What have you checked so far?
Have you...
changed the fuel or checked for water in it?
checked the airbox, snorkel and air filter?
changed the spark plugs @ 7,500 miles or checked for a dirty, loose plug or weak spark?
replaced the air filter 2 years as recommended?
checked the inline fuel filter for dirt?
What mods do you have on your bike?
had a look @ the Trouble Shooting Guide

My 2005 has acted similar to this a few times after it has been sitting awhile. Both times I fixed it by cleaning out the main jet and slow jet. Ran great after that, but its about a 2 hour job.

Sounds like dirty carbs to me,before tearing into them try running seafoam thru them.
My dads VTX was bogging down when he gave it gas, mechanic said he needed carbs gone over, but first try a tank with seafoam mixed in the gas. That was 2 seasons ago bike runs mint. Now he adds a capful to every tank.
Bike ran great after that.
