Unhappy Bike slowly stopped running. New Rider. PLEASE HELP?

Hi! I just bought a 2002 Ninja250R. 18,000 miles. (my first bike!) Ran TOTALLY fine when I got it. After I put around 20 miles on it, it started acting funny. Basically, its come down to this:
When I try to start it, I hear a pinging/knocking noise. It used to start, but the noise would go away when it started to reach 1,2K rpm. however, NOW, the bike wont start at all.
I'm completely new to most things mechanical, and i'm brand new to bikes in general. just pulling this theory out of my @$$, but do the valves need to be adjusted? If you have any ideas regarding what could be wrong, and how I can fix it, please let me know!
Like I said, I'm a new rider, and I really don't want this to discourage me from riding. Please help, and Thanks!

The knocking could be from a few different things.
IC igniter trouble
Carbon built up in combustion chamber
Fuel poor quality or incorrect
Spark plug incorrect

When was the last time the valves where adjusted or the clutch inspected? These things can cause abnormal engine noise as well. The first thing to do would be to make sure your plugs and fuel are ok, then look into replacing the IC Ignitor if you have no spark on the plugs. You can find a used ignitor on ebay.
