Down shifting

I'm a new rider and I took the Motorcycle safety course a month ago. I have successfully accomplished shifting up , cornering , and basic motorcycle functions. But I'm having a problem with down shifting. When I come to a light or stop sign I use the brakes and pull the clutch in and down shift and stop in first gear , without releasing the clutch until I take off again. The two times I down shifted and released the clutch and rolled back on the throttle the bike jerked forward on me. So I need an explanation on how to smoothly down shift. I remember hearing in the course match engine speed to road speed but the bike still jerks forward on me.
Thanks in advance!

it sounds like you're down shifting correctly. It's your take-off that you're messing up at, from what you wrote.

You have to ease on to the throttle just as you ease off the clutch. When you're taking off, you have to slowly let off the clutch as you accelerate, the same goes as you slow to a lower speed after you're down shifting.

Hopefully that makes sense. From what you said in your post, it seems like your focus needs to be on clutch control

Sorry if I confused you , I'm fine at accelerating. The thing I need help with is down shifting let's say from 5th gear to 4th gear, how do I make it a smooth down shift and not allow the bike to jerk forward on me ?

I meant "taking off" after a downshift. Going from 5th to 4th and then putting on the throttle again. That's how I understood it.

alright lol. Then like we all said, has to do with easing the clutch out / letting go of the clutch more smoothly.
