Start Up Cost

I am hoping to get info on what your startup cost were? Not including the moto.
(insurance & registration, gear, accessories)

I ask because this will help me budget better and allow me not to forget anything.

Thanks!

Welcome Nefrider!

Motorcycling is a pretty expensive hobby to get into.

I tied about as much into gear as I did the bike. Some of the best advice I got was to spend money on gear... If you're sliding across the ground at 40 mph, you'll be glad you did In all seriousness good gear can save your life and be used for many seasons.

My insurance is a little under 300/ year but that's a pretty generous plan.

I would budget about 200-500 for entry level gear/gear packages (sometimes bike shops will have helmets, gloves, and jackets in a set) and insurance.

Nicer gear probably starts around 500+

Hope this helps!!

my jacket- $215 (icon not leather)
helmet- $199.94 (speed and strength - very nice has a built in flip down sun shield*)
gloves- $70 (very nice alpine stars they were they only ones i thought were comfortable)
boots/shoes- $89.99 (i got speed and strength "shoes" high tops that i can wear to school and not look really weird looking and they are strong and comfortable)
(i also got straps to hold my jeans down) - $20 (very helpful)

I am 17 but my dad "owns my bike" (his name is on the title) so for insurance i'm paying roughly $46 per month with a first payment of $109

Also don't forget about licensing fees roughly $26
and idk about the registration but if you are buying from a dealer be prepared to pay about $250 in paper work fees and misc. charges.

That is about as much as i know so i hope it helped!

I spent $80 on an HJC helmet via Amazon. $90 for a Bilt jacket and $90 for the Dainese spine brace to insert in the jacket via CycleGear.com. Also got $40 Bilt leather gloves with carbon fiber knuckles and $2 ear plugs (get them). Insurance is around $25/month and registration for my 09' 250R in San Diego was $101. I haven't bought riding boots/shoes.

Update: Ok, just wanted to give an update on what I ended up spending on my gear. I found a used red 09 N250 at a dealer so they will be taking care of the DMV part.

Insurance: 125/year
Helmet: Bell Vortex Attack $145
Jacket: Alpinestars T-GP-R Air $164
Gloves: Alpinestars Scheme Kevlar $51

I have not purchase shoes yet but I will be buying the TCX x squared shoe for $100.

Just thought I'd share. Thanks everyone who gave their input.

Boots - $89.99, Speed and Strength, Hard Knock Life
