How to properly ride on steep downhills

Hi guys,

New Ninja 250r owner here!

You know Seattle has many really steep downhills (30-45 degree). What should be the proper way to ride on such downhills in general?

Couple questions I have:
1, Can I use engine brake (is pulling the clutch the proper way?) and apply both brakes?
2, Should I downshift to first gear and apply both brakes?

Thanks very much!

My first encounters with "super steep" angle down hill riding was in the high desert mountains (dirtbike) of California. But I'm sure you'll have way better traction on the streets than I had in the desert dirt.

To answer your questions, #1. Yes #2. Yes, if you need to go that slow.

Down hills should be treated "similar" to riding on flat roads - "Brake normal". Brake as you would on a flat road. However, don't allow gravity to pull your upper body forward. (Unless you're really good at doing stoppies.) Lock your knees into your tank and use your stomach muscles to hold your upper body back keeping your weight off the handle bars.

Gravity may increase the down hill speed you wish to go even with the throttle closed, so rather than holding (and maybe over-heating) the brakes, down shift one gear at a time (engine braking) to help you maintain the speed you feel comfortable with, brake as needed to slow you down even more. Only pull in your clutch lever when you're shifting or ready to stop.

Enjoy the streets of Seattle.
