Wanna be

I have owned several (10) motorcycles over time. First wuz a 1967 Yamaha 125. My last was a Harley Davidson of a girl, the Sportster. Cool, but kinda boring.

I will be 60 in April. I think I have lived twice my life expectancy.

Anyway, what are the RPM's at 60 mph on the highway? I would be driving it several different ways to attend shooting events. Each about 2 hours from the crib, once per month. Rarely twice.

May have to do the Ninja 300. Ascared of the 650 because I know myself too well . . . Wheelies in 2nd gear . . . I don't bounce so good, anymore.

Howdy (from Dallas area),

RPM's and speed will depend on the sprocket set up on the bike. Stock set up for the Ninja 250 is 14/45, however most modify the stock gearing for one reason or another.
Those who ride freeway like to reduce the RPM speed as much as possible and still be able to have passing power in the top gear if need be. As a frequent Hwy rider I use 15/41 and still outpace most traffic easy.
15/41 @ 8k = 76.3 mph in 6th gear
15/42 @ 8k = 74.5 mph in 6th gear
15/43 @ 8k = 72.8 mph in 6th gear
15/44 @ 8k = 71.1 mph in 6th gear
15/45 @ 8k = 69.6 mph in 6th gear

14/45 @ 6k = 48.7 mph in 6th gear (stock gearing)

15/43, it offers the best balance of acceleration and top speed. The stock Ninja has more than enough HP for this sprocket setup.

The Ninja 300 stock sprocket set up is 14/42.

14/42 @ 6k = 55.6 mph in 6th gear

I wouldn't be too scared of the Ninja 650. Even though it's a 650, it's a parallel twin engine. It has nice power, but it's very subdued, unlike 600 Supersports. You won't be snatching too many wheelies in 2nd gear unless you don't know how to ride and really wring the throttle.

Thanks!

15/41 at 6000 rpm about 60 mph? Red line is 13000 so that would be a reasonable cruise speed?

Yes on both. 60 mph @ 6k rpms is indicated speed. Also keep in mind that with a 15/41 sprocket set up the bike will not reach redline in 6th gear., depending on conditions (engine mods, altitude, temp, etc..) about 11-11.5k rpms

Hello! I'm not an expert in all this yet, but I'm interested in such questions. I esteem your opinions, I think it will come in handy.
