WHY WON'T IT START!? Please help!!!

Okay, situation: Bought my 08 250r on Saturday night. When the person I bought it from was riding it, it stalled A LOT. And the idle was terrible. It would also start and then as soon as it was given any throttle it would die.

My first assumption was dirty carbs, so that was what I checked first. Took the carbs out, cleaned them really well and started to put the bike back together. I had a lot of problems finding the correct hoses, but I'm pretty sure I got it figured out.

Once the hoses were connected, the tank was back on, the battery was charged and the bike was primed, I started the bike up and it ran for a moment, but as soon as the choke was turned off, it died again. After that it wouldn't start back up. I let the battery charge more that day snd when I came home that night tried again. Same situation, started right up, but as soon as I took my finger off the starter, it died and wouldn't start back up again and it seriously smelled of gasoline.

Why exactly is it doing this?? I'm worried because before I took the carbs out , even though it sounded like hell, it still started. Now it's not even doing that. My boyfriend think the gas is bad, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. My next approach would be to the spark plugs, but I'm new to this and I'm still not sure, especially because it's an 08 with only 7k miles on it.

I'm nervous that when I put the carbs back in place, something got connected incorrectly. When I cleaned them I used carb cleaner along with compressed air. I made sure I could see through the holes in the pilot and the main jet, and I took the caps off and made sure the insides were cleaned. But maybe I still didn't do it right? I'm not sure.

Does anyone have any knowledge as to what this could be? Please help!!! It's driving me crazy. I just want to ride my bike. I miss riding so much. And the weather is gorgeous. I just need to get it fixed up =( Thanks in further for your suggestions. I greatly appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. =]

To anyone that was curious, I had hoses connected incorrectly. Attached the air vent hose to the tank instead of letting it stay open. The second it was disconnected it started! Silly me. Guess I need to pay more attention next time.
