does anyone know if its possible to put the wheels from the newer style ninjas on my '05?

You mean put on '08+ 17" wheels on '07- 16" OEM setup?
I'd have to ask why anyone would want to do that.
To get "performance"? Or just want to have the look?
Because either way, at the end of the day it's all still a 250.
Guess the only way to satisfy your curiosity and wants to to just go get 17" wheels and see if they fit.
No reply to me is necessary, I for one think that it's a useless "mod".
Motorcycle engineers are pretty smart people, I don't think you know anything that they're missing out on.

It is possible but you need to be able to fabricate spaces and modifie the break hanger. With the 17 inch you have more choices in tires. But because of the width you are limited to 140 rear . So it's a lot of work for 10mm of rubber.
