on the 88-07 model, obviously the helmet lock is crap. Your helmet will melt on the exhaust if you use it.
But there is another way. I thought I was a genius until I realized other people had already done it.
If you remove your seat and look under it, you'll see the metal "clips" attached to the seat. If you look closely at the clip's base you'll see an empty screw-hole to the side of them that, were you to put a screw in, aims at the side of the seat. I saw this and thought to myself, "If I put a screw in there and hooked my D-rings from my helmet on, I wonder if the seat would lock/close." And it does! Not perfectly, but both clips on the seat lock and my helmet is secure and away from the exhaust. I'm not sure what size the thread is, but if you took your seat to any hardware store or a nuts&bolts supply store, you can get the screws for about .50
I'll try to upload a couple pics later if anyone's interested.
I didn't think of that, but i just decided to move that bitch, unscrewed it and drilled 2 holes in the passenger grab handle and then put it on and it will not move, i an almost pick the bike up by it, sorry for the crappy pic, but this way you can have your helemt sit on the seat instead of just hanging there
