Can I wear Running shoes?

Noob question!

I'm waiting on a shipment of SIDI Fusion boots to arrive (hopefully next week!) but I start motorcycle lessons tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what to wear.

I'm told running shoes aren't recommended but seeing as it's an introduction weekend (starting the engine, sitting, crusing, getting to know the friction point), is there really any harm in wearing running shoes and tucking in the laces?

Thank you to all who respond.

I Know its probably not safe but I wear my Everyday walking shoes when i ride sometimes. The Ohio MSF course doesn't allow people to wear shoes that dont cover the ankle but, that could be just here.
