Shifting

How high do you let your RPM get up to before you shift? Wanting to make sure I don't hurt my engine by letting it stay in the 8k-9k area too long.

All depends on my mood, or if I'm running late normally 6-7 sometimes I'll run her right up to 13

I usually shift between 8-9k, with the max being 10k. I remember hearing a bunch of people saying the bike likes to be shifted around 10k, but the way the engine sounds at that RPM makes me think it's not the best idea. I also like shifting out of first gear pretty low as the engine doesn't seem to like high RPMs in 1st. That's just my 2 cents and my connection with my own bike. Every bike is different. Like Gabe said, your bike will tell you.

usually when im just commuting around town- ill shift at 4-6k rpms and chill in 6th gear usually going 30-60mph, its chill and saves gas & engine life.

One of my coworkers has a 07 250 dance the day he got it he's always shifted when the rev limiter kicks in St like 13500-14, his ninja has just over 30k miles and runs fine
