    It effects it many ways, first off it lets dirt and other objects into the engine which is not good for the engine, and carburetors.
    Second it imbalances the the amount of air flow that the carburetors need to work properly, the carburetors are a CV type, which stands for constant velocity.

    So go out and purchase a K&N filter ASAP. And be done with i, and your carburetors are in need of a through and meticulous cleaning I'm betting as well.
