Hello everyone - I'm new to this forum so first of all hello. I'm looking for 1000-1500 reduction in RPM, particularly highway at 65mph plus. There are a few ways to arrive at the same gear ratio of what I believe to be target of 2.92+/- for starters.
What would be a better ratio? 14/41, 15/44, or 13/38. These all yield similar gear ratios but do they yield the same resuts? I'm inclined to think since the 250r is very low on torque the 13 tooth front sproket would be easier to spin, yet it's spinning a "heavier" rear sproket if you will. What is your take on the issue & what has anyone tried or is there a formula we can use to simulate wheel hp & torque??

I believe one of the forum members did a +1 on the front sprocket and it help reduced about 500RPM at 80mph, with no noticeable reduction in rideability at low speed. It's cheaper to change the front sprocket than the rear, or both.
The front sprocket itself is cheaper, but labor if you don't do it yourself will make it cost more than replacing the rear sprocket. Replacing the rear is easier on labor, just about anyone can do it with some basic tools. The front sprocket takes a little extra oomph in the tool department from what I remember.

Not really too worried about the price. Mainly results.

Ive also had that same concern in the beginging. But after 1000 miles I think the bike performs really well with that sprock combo. So why change the manufactures specs? Same as tires why go with wider ones if its made for the skinny ones? Correct me if Im wrong.

Best mod going, makes the 250R much more enjoyable. 15/45 is what your looking for 45 is stock rear. Each gear is longer in breadth!

If you go to a 15 front sprocket do you have to add links to the chain?

no chain is plenty long, loosen rear axle and chain adjusters. slide axle forward then readjust, very easy indeed.

resurrecting a dead thread. i put the 14/42 combo on mine. i love it. cruises MUCH better on the interstate. gets me a little better gas mileage. still takes off just fine. i love it.

It comes down to the level of other mods you have done ANd the weight of the rider, The area that you want to ride in .IE beach or mountains. Do you want gas mileage or speed? Everything is a trade off. But not that much.
I would replace the front with a 15 then try a 44-43 -and 42 and see what you like. You don't have to do anything with the chain and If you have a rear wheel stand changing gears rear gears dose not take long.

I also will be doing the 15T 45T just the front +1 is all you need. I will post on how I feel about the difference and result when I am done. I've been hearing this is the best combo for he buck too. Just that the nut is hard to get off. I hear it is easier to get off with two guys. But can be done with one. Just sit on the bike, put foot on brake and crack the sucker off. There should be a pin there too to hold it in place. Don't loose it!
