: [2008+] 2008 Ninja 250R oil / filter change and common torque specs
Vtec44 08-03-2008, 06:55 PM Oil type: API SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ or SL with JASO MA.
Viscosity : SAE 10W-40
Capacity: 1.4 qt, or 1.7qt when filter is also replaced.
Oil drain bolt: 14.5lb-ft
Oil filter mounting bolt: 14.5lb-ft
Oil screen mounting bolts: 7.25lb-ft (87lb-in)
Frequency: According to the service manual, it's recommended that you change the oil filter every oil change, and oil change at every 7500 miles (yes that's seven thousand five-hundred miles).
You do not need a rear stand for this, but it's highly recommended.
* REMEMBER TO LOCTITE ALL BOLTS!!!
* Warm the engine just enough for the oil to circulate freely.
* Place oil pan under the bike to catch the oil.
* Remove the drain bolt, and replace the washer if it's worn/damaged.
* Remove the 5 oil screen bolts, 3 short and 2 long.
* Remove the screen from the engine and clean it (many need to use a small flat head screw driver to pry it out)
* Put the screen back into the engine, gasket on the screen housing, tighten the oil screen bolts, 7.25lb-ft.
* Tighten both the drain bolt and oil filter to specs, 14.5lb-ft.
* Remove and replace oil filter, 14.5lb-ft for the filter bolt.
* Fill up the oil (1.7qt with oil filter replaced).
* Done!
91stealthtt 08-03-2008, 07:22 PM Not going to do a step by step? Want me too. I need to change it soon anyway.
Vtec44 08-03-2008, 08:36 PM Holy crap, how much more step by step do people really need? LOL
91stealthtt 08-03-2008, 08:39 PM I treat my Maintenance stuff like no one has ever done it. Just to be safe hehehe. Also I would add what size socket you need for both bolts.
Malaqui 08-11-2008, 11:08 AM i need to change my oil. i think i'll do it today.... repsol oil anyone? or should i stick to standard oil?
Vtec44 08-11-2008, 01:06 PM Standard oil for me.
Malaqui 08-11-2008, 03:28 PM change of plans. will replace the oil after track day. and get anew set of tires while im at it.
Jadedpill 08-17-2008, 08:08 AM this is a bit off topic but; vtec...where's the best place to buy a rear stand...should I just go to my local kawa dealership or internet for better deal?
Vtec44 08-18-2008, 04:17 PM If you have spools on your swing arm, a pitbull or similar stand would work. You can get it from any motorcycle accessories store or Ebay.
minizoom 08-20-2008, 07:50 PM I did my oil change today and decided to remove and check the oil screen. There were a lot of debris especially metal particles. I even have a magnetic drain plug which collects the fine particles, but not big ones cause the oil screen would block it from coming out. I really didn’t think this had to be done, but I’m glad I did.
Vtec44 08-20-2008, 08:03 PM How many miles do you have on you bike since the last oil change, and how many total on the bike?
minizoom 08-20-2008, 08:10 PM How many miles do you have on you bike since the last oil change, and how many total on the bike?
My oil change record: 40.6, 221, 512, 1507, 3572 repsol semi oil, and finally at 5496 with repsol again. In between oil change from the last is 1924 miles.
jhcrash 08-23-2008, 11:55 PM Yes in the original post it should be edited to note checking the screen every few oil changes.
I will be changing mine tomorrow so if stealth does not write a DIY with pics I will.
Vtec44 08-30-2008, 08:45 PM I just changed my oil again, this time with Motul 300v Factory Line. I'll write up a review on the oil in after a few hundred miles. :scooter
NINJA64K 04-08-2009, 07:57 PM hey i have a ninja 250 2008 and its has 900 miles on it and i never done an oil change how much damage have i done to my bike
edgary 04-09-2009, 08:16 AM I'm sure someone more experienced will comment on the damage (although I think it's relative to riding habits), but I just wanted to tell you to change it as soon as possible.
If I'm not mistaken, the reason for the frequency of the first couple of oil changes is that there might be particles in the oil while the engine is breaking in, and by changing the oil you get rid of those particles as well.
NINJA64K 04-09-2009, 04:04 PM ohh okay thanks for your help
minichris 04-10-2009, 08:32 AM yea just change oil and filter ASAP and don't think about damage
NINJA64K 04-11-2009, 06:25 AM do i have to rejet the bike if i put a slip on exhaust on my bike is just and exhast off a ducati
minichris 04-11-2009, 07:31 AM slip on, doubt it. full system yes.
NINJA64K 04-11-2009, 07:58 AM ohh okay thanks just asking because some guy was making a big deal about it and said that i was goin to damage the bike
Zildjian 04-11-2009, 03:19 PM I noticed a big improvement in a smoother clutch & quieter gearbox when I changed over to Mobil 1 V-Twin. It doesn't seem to be breaking down nearly as fast as conventional did.
(I'm running 20-50 due to hot climate riding)
NINJA64K 04-13-2009, 07:51 AM is the oil recomended in the manual is it the same u they use on cars 10w-40
minichris 04-13-2009, 09:05 AM 10-40 BUT motorcycle specific. car oil can cause clutch slippage
Kenny 04-22-2009, 06:40 AM I just did my first change. I used Amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil and NAPA Part number PS4941 oil filter. I really did not notice any improvemnts over the factory fill. I guess no news is good news.
cifex 05-06-2009, 06:51 PM Vtec: In the photo attached to your first post. IMG_1125. What is that unlabeled bolt right next to the filter housing?
cifex 05-06-2009, 07:40 PM Nevermind. I found it. Tag #92066A (Filter housing plug is 92066). It's listed as Oil drain plug, thought it seems kind of useless. I guess so it's not as messy removing the filter housing?

92066A is under Crankcase
92066 under OIL PUMP / FILTER
